Description

By the time I had arrived in Thailand to take on the responsibilities of an aerial photographer, I had spent three years in the Air Force acquiring the skills and knowledge of photography in general. I felt confident I could put those skills to work as a still-photographer and successfully complete this new tour.

Before I was to report to my new assignment I had to attend three other schools to prepare me for the rigors of my Aerial Tour of Duty. My training began with air crew survival at Fairchild AFB. While there, I came face to face with my physical and mental strengths, weaknesses, and my resolve to survive: both in body and in spirit.

From our first introductory day to the final afternoon when we received our Certificates of Completion, our instructors bombarded us with useful information and field craft for surviving the first hours of an ejection.

Being exposed to the tropical jungle around Clark AFB to a youngster of 20 years was exotic indeed. Having Negrito natives as instructors teaching us lessons in jungle craft and survival just added to the mystique. Their knowledge of the jungle was not so much taught as lived. In the short time we students spent under their tutelage, we left with enough practical bits of survival techniques to survive for 24 hours, the amount of time a standard rescue was to occur. During the jungle survival phase, I discovered that volunteering is a two-edged sword. The action may be hazardous, but the completion of the task brings its own rewards. In addition to the jungle craft, I had my first taste of using a two-way radio to communicate with as I directed the positioning of a helicopter for my extraction. From this short but very intense exercise, I learned how much words matter, and that patience is not just a virtue, but a state of mind.

In addition to my beer tasting at every port, I learned to keep track of my flight schedule, so I was never late for departures and developed the ability to stay flexible with the constant changes to our itinerary.

My travel buddy and I were turned loose in Bangkok, definitely not a city for two naive servicemen such as ourselves to roam around in. We managed to persevere by listening to our inner voices, thereby managing to see but not taste any of the city’s sins ...that is, with the exception of the beer! The only moderate fall from grace I managed to incur was a small tattoo by the “only female tattoo artist in Bangkok,” or so I had been assured.

About the Author:

The Author was born in Pau, France. He was raised in San Francisco, where he attended the French-English Notre Dame Des Victoires Grammar School, by day and the Russian-English school in the afternoon. He and his family moved to Santa Cruz, California where he completed his primary education and called the town home. He was mentored by several adults. It was their influence that played a major role in Bill’s decision to volunteer for the Air Force and choose photography as his military specialty. After completing Basic Training at Lackland AFB, Texas, Bill attended the photography school at Lowry AFB, Denver Colorado before receiving orders to the 15th Reconnaissance Technical Squadron, located at March AFB, Riverside California. He spent the next two years at March perfecting his craft. He received orders to Thailand in the last half of his enlistment. His new duty station was: Detachment 3, 601st Photo Flight, Ubon Royal Thai Air Force Base, Ubon Ratchathani, Thailand.

While stationed at Ubon from 1971-1972, Bill covered all aspects of photography.

Upon his return to the United States, he moved to Flagstaff, Arizona where under the tutelage of Bill Breed, of the Museum of Northern Arizona, Bill worked at the museum as well as cut and split Aspens for split rail fences. He attended College at University of Northern Arizona, before moving back to Santa Cruz to complete his Associates Degree at Cabrillo Junior College, followed by a Bachelor’s Degree in Anthropology (Archaeology) and a Secondary Teaching Degree at San Francisco State University. Bill taught at various schools throughout California before settling at Saint Francis Elementary School for Boys in Watsonville, California, and Marello Preparatory High School in nearby Santa Cruz.

In 1979 he rejoined the US Army Reserve, where he stayed until the completion of his enlistment. He rose to the rank of Sergeant First Class, E-7 before leaving to become a full time civilian, husband and father.

As a civilian, Bill became a full-time canoe/kayak salesman for California Canoe and Kayak in Sacramento, California, and a kayak instructor/guide for Current Adventures a California kayaking outfitter. During the winter months, Bill drove a school bus for the San Juan Unified School District; he retired after fifteen years of service. His many years paddling the waters of the High Sierra Nevada and its foothills resulted in a regional best seller five book series titled: Up the Lake with A Paddle, published by Fine Edge Nautical & Recreational Publishing.

Upon retirement, Bill and his wife of over forty years, Louise Ann (Cherry) Van der Ven, also a former Army veteran, sold their home, distributed all the rocks and bones from various adventures, packed their belongings; along with their four dogs, and one kayak and moved to Tennessee; where he continues to paddle and write.
